The Database Profession The roles and responsibilities of database professionals have many labels and definitions in the computing industry. We hear common terms such as "DBA," "Database Analyst," "Database Manager," "Data Analyst," and "Database Architect" tossed around, but what functions do these and other titles encompass? Where do they fit within the application projects and corporate structure? How important are they? You will undoubtedly hear as many opinions as people you ask! I view experienced database professionals as vital to every data processing environment, leaders who must play key roles in all aspects of requirements definition, application design, query design, programming, testing, performance evaluation and tuning, production operations, and ongoing change management, as well as developing and maintaining the enterprise data model and identifying data warehouse and data mining opportunities. Information is power. Data is among a corporation's most valuable assets yet time and again I see the keepers of this asset relegated to a minor role in the corporate structure, often an afterthought (or ignored entirely) in the project development life cycle. As a result, data is ill-defined, undocumented, unnecessarily redundant, inconsistent, difficult and slow to retrieve and manipulate, and unavailable to other corporate functions. Our Mission The mission of GoodWinter Database Architects, Inc. is to change this ill-conceived perception of database professionals through ongoing advocacy, and to offer clients only the best database consultants and employees in the industry through a variety of flexible and inexpensive placement arrangements. Our Services Projects/Employers... We offer our clients only database candidates who have passed rigorous technical interviews and reference checking, ensuring that clients do not waste their valuable time and money interviewing unqualified candidates or later discovering after the consultant / employee has been on the job for a while that their skills are not as they were represented. We are very selective when reviewing consultants and employee candidates who apply to be listed. Database Consultants And Employee Candidates... We offer database professionals a central gathering spot to further their chosen profession, to improve their skill set, to offer their services to the computing industry. We offer a variety of placement terms that will suit their business preference, including direct client contracts, subcontracts, and direct client employment. Additionally, database professionals often develop a personal suite of tools over the years to assist them with their tasks; we offer an internet storefront to market those tools on a consignment basis. Referrals To Other Agencies.... As a consultant for many years, I have experienced and heard about excessively high and in some cases unconscionable consulting margins and employee agency placement fees, fees that I believe are undeserved in exchange for the services that the agencies provide. Having said that, let me emphasize that
not all contract and employment placement agencies are greedy and corrupt!
I have worked with many firms for whom I have great respect. I also
recognize that many firms offer a valuable service, particularly to those
new to consulting. Some offer full employment benefits, some carry
cash flow, and many have excellent long-term working relationships with
their clients, perhaps to the point of being their exclusive provider.
And we certainly do not know about all available client projects or skilled
consultants and employees at any point in time. To that end, we also
provide referrals to those agencies who we believe meet our guidelines
for fairness, openness and integrity.
Full Spectrum Compaq/Tandem NSK Services.... As a long-term committed provider of Compaq/Tandem NSK services, for this unique platform we extend our services beyond database specialists to the broad spectrum of Compaq/Tandem NSK specialists, including system architects, application designers and programmers, data communication programmers, system administrators, and operators. Why Use Us? What sets us apart from other contract and employment firms?
Best regards, Gary A. Bonhiver
